A shop that has to prove its own catalogue

rKernel started because buying parts for a robot is harder than it should be. Listings copy each other, specifications are optimistic, and the component that arrives is rarely the one in the photograph. Meanwhile the tutorials that tell you what to buy are usually written by people who have never had that part fail at 1 a.m.

So we tied the two halves together. Every part in the catalogue appears in a build we filmed. If a component made a build harder, it does not get listed, however good the margin looks. The video series are free and complete, including the parts where something did not work and we had to go back.

What we stock

33 parts across seven subsystems: boards and compute, sensors, motors and actuators, power and wiring, chassis and mechanics, project kits, and bench tools. The bias is towards parts that teach something. A cheap ultrasonic ranger stays on the shelf next to a lidar, because learning why one is noisy is worth more than being handed the expensive answer.

What we film

0 episodes, 0 min of instruction, structured as series that build on each other: electronics foundations, a PID line follower, a ROS 2 rover that maps a room, and a six-axis arm with kinematics derived from first principles. Each episode lists its exact bill of materials and its chapters, so you can skip to the part you are stuck on.

How we choose parts

• It has to survive a full build on camera, not a bench demo.
• Documentation and drivers have to be public and maintained.
• It has to still be buyable in a year, or we say so on the page.
• If a cheaper part teaches the same lesson, we stock the cheaper one.
